I bought a CF to SD adapter on Trademe a week or so ago. Had the idea that it would be useful as I have an 8GB micro SD card and as the microSD to SD adapter is just a bunch of wires it would work in the CF adapter, which it does.

It also fits into and works properly in my camera (a Sony a350). However, it does not work in my iPod. I have a CF to whatever the fuck iPods have adapter in my 5th generation iPod, and I was using a 16GB CF card in it, which worked reasonably well.

If you use the CF to SD adapter in it and try to get iTunes to restore the iPod, it saves its stuff to it, the iPod shows a loading screen, then goes right back to the screen saying you need to restore your iPod.

The CF/SD card thing works fine afterwards, have not tested the iPod as I don’t particularly care if it works or not. My phone is a better audio player and my computer is better again.

It would be interesting to get a CF to IDE adapter and see what I can find out about the hardware, but I don’t have one. Also saw a CF to SATA adapter on Trademe, but the person selling it wouldn’t accept credit card, bank transfers seem like too much effort, and I am a lazy bastard. Anyway, the SATA adapter might obscure the information I want to see in much the same way as the CF to SD adapter obscures the information (probably jack shit, have never seen any way to get detailed information about SD cards like that) about the SD card.

Am wiping the 16GB CF card, it will be far more useful in my camera. I might also be willing to part with the shell of my former iPod if someone has a better use for it than me. Just don’t expect to get the old hard drive it had before I added the CF to iPod adapter, it rests in pieces, some in my desk, some in my box of shiny things, some on a wooden box on my windowsill.

By the way, did you know that iPod hard drives are very similar to the hard drives found in Toshiba Libretto laptops?
